Because the sets had three different styles between them, I had the idea to paint them up for different terrain types. The desert and ice rocks came together quickly but the woodlandy rocks have been in a partially undercoated state long enough that I had to wash the dust off them before I could finish priming them.<div><br></div><div>But with the four day weekend, some good light and the right mood, things aligned so that I could finally get them finished.</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div><div><br /></div><div>It is hard to believe that the first edition of Frostgrave came out over <i>seven</i> <i>freaking years ago</i>. As someone who backed the Necromunda horse when it first came out and thus couldn't afford to jump in on Mordheim when it was released a few years later, Frostgrave was the more approachable and in-print alternative that I had been waiting for.</div><div><br /></div><div>I rushed out and purchased a dozen or so metal figures from a variety of manufacturers to make my first warband and promptly.. never painted them. I have wanted a nicely painted warband ever since but with my glacial painting speeds, it was never going to happen.</div><div><br /></div><div>By the time 2nd edition came out a scant two years ago, I was starting to suspect that a <i>nicely </i>painted warband was no longer within my ability. Accepting that, I naturally.. started a brand new warband. This one featured the easier to paint and cheaper-to-replace-when-I-screw-them-up Frostgrave plastics. By July 2021, I had managed to paint.. two horses. And not only are they from an optional supplement, you can only take one! </div><div><br /></div><div>But fast forward a year (and a bit) later and I have actually managed to finish the rest of the models! That's like.. almost a model a month! Madness. I would like to thank my diminishing ability and eyesight for making this happen. Agonising for months over a single model and producing a B- of a paint job is no longer an option; a one month C- job is now all I can manage. So.. er.. yay? </div><div><br /></div><div>In the front row we have Lyra the apprentice, Ranald the Artificer and Captain Graves.</div><div><br /></div><div>The trio on the left is an infantrywoman and two thugs, while on the right we have another thug, a thief, an infantrywoman and a crossbowman.</div><div><br /></div><div>Finally, bringing up the rear is a low level version of Artemis (the Captain's horse), the higher level version of Artemis (featuring a mounted version of Captain Graves) and my large construct, Rowdy. If I ever find a medium construct miniature I like then I may add one to the warband.. but otherwise the Ranald's Expedition is finally ready to go! </div>Siygesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12506354938045172998noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8466174775728190316.post-63911928751990200232021-09-30T06:52:00.005-07:002021-09-30T07:58:52.190-07:00September SunSeptember is a tricky month. The kids go back to school (or if you are reading this in the future and are currently enjoying Covid-22, maybe they don't) but you can't appreciate it because you are still paying for that time off work you had over the summer.<div><br /></div><div>The days are cold in the morning but still bright and warm in the afternoon, and for about half the month you still have some daylight in the evenings to get things done. And then autumn sneaks in, the rain comes back and you are soon huddled around a fire by 6pm, waiting for the wolves to come and eat you.</div><div><br /></div><div>When it comes to tackling projects in my hobby closest, I normally need to wait for the perfect storm of need, desire, enthusiasm, time, materials and space in order for that project to miraculously transition from "Something I will do one day" to "Holy cow it is done!". But in September, all of those things can be substituted for <i>desperation.</i></div><div><i><br /></i></div><div>And so here are some trees, designed to match the mat I will use for Fallout and Gamma Wolves. And some billboards, also for Fallout, though now that I have painted them I've decided I will put them on bases so they aren't really complete. Now that It Is Dark Again, they may not be completed until 2022!</div><div><br /></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The trees are Woodland Scenic armatures stuck to MDF bases covered in sanded polystyrene and Sculptamold. I messed <i>that</i> up by making too much, so while two of the tree bases are relatively smooth, the other two ended up being clumpy and difficult to work with because it was drying by the time I applied it. I will make it in smaller batches next time so hopefully I will avoid the same mistake.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Also shown is the base for one of my Gamma Wolves frames because I wanted to make sure the colours and style of the tree bases matched. When Blitz first came out, I even dabbled in the Heavy Gear minis game but I didn't really give it a fair shake until DP9 launched their first kickstarter. <div><br /></div><div>I picked up a few of the metal minis and of course, a pledge for the new plastic kits too but since the rules (and more importantly, force lists) were in a state of flux, I didn't want to build anything until I knew how many of my favourite designs I could fit into a standard game.. and how many points a standard game would actually be!</div><div><br /></div><div>When DP9 finally put out the force compendium for 3rd edition, I drew up three CNCS / WFP lists (50, 100 and 150 TV), one for each of the three game sizes, ordered what I didn't have from Shiny Games, then began building the models I would need. This evening, I finally finished the last of them*</div><div><br /></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div></div><div><br /></div><div>Back row: Koala, Leopard, Para Strike Hunter, Leopard, Scorpion helo. </div><div>Middle row: Hunter Gunner x2, Assault Hunter x2. </div><div>Front row: Wildcat Pathfinder, Bobcat Flackcat x2, Weasel, Badger APC, Field Gun, Infantry squad x2</div><div><br /></div><div>I have to say that their resin kits (the Bagder APC and Scorpion helicopter) were in the sweet spot of detail vs ease of preparation and I wouldn't mind if some of the gears switched over to that material. </div><div><br /></div><div>The plastics were easy to build (though they don't take polycement very well) but had stiff poses, and were noticeably skinnier and taller than their metal equivalents. </div><div><br /></div><div>The metals, by contrast, were nice and chunky with much better posing and the superglue worked as well as you would expect.. but everything needed a ton of cleanup; mold lines were for sure an issue but the biggest headache were the seams where one half of the mold had slipped, or otherwise did not line up with the other half. It was particularly bad on the arms and in filing down the half that was too thick, I lost quite a lot of detail. <br /><br /></div><div>Even so, when I decide to get some additional gears, I will get them in metal as long as they are available, despite the price. I will technically need two more stock Hunters (the Assault Hunters will serve as a proxies until then) and I want a pair of Dingos because the weapon loadouts are a lot more interesting than the ones available to the Koalas.</div><div><br /></div><div>In the meantime I also have a Strider to build although that's just for variety - it is easy enough to switch out the Scorpion since the points cost is similar. No rush for that, though. These need to get painted first... </div><div><br /></div><div>* apart from two more Hunters, which I don't have enough of. And my Wildcat Pathfinder is actually a Wildcat Riotmaster but when I decided I wanted a Wildcat with a rifle, I realised there are no medium rifles on ANY of the plastic kits, and no medium rifles in my bits box from the other metals. So I have another Wildcat to build once I've sourced a medium rifle from somewhere..</div>Siygesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12506354938045172998noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8466174775728190316.post-88352940292986509502021-08-29T04:27:00.003-07:002021-08-29T07:36:33.439-07:00Not-cromorphs<div>I have wanted some necromorph models for ages and I think that started when I got my copy of Sedition Wars. I guess I was hoping that some day, a company would get the license to make an official Dead Space game and then I wouldn't have to make something myself.</div><div><br /></div><div>However, with Quarrantine 37 due for release in a couple of weeks, I realised I was going to need some space zombies.. and while I already have a bunch of the Mantic plague zombies and the Virus-inspired Strain from Sedition Wars, I figured now was as good a time as any to cross another project off the list.</div><div><br /></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div></div><div><br /></div><div>Made from a mixture of Deadzone plague zombies, Kings of War zombies and Kings of War Nightstalker Reapers, these are neither well converted nor well painted.. but in a first for me, when I sat back and looked at them, I decided "Eh, they'll do". I guess it was because I didn't plan to do anything else with the kits so it didn't feel like I was wasting or devaluing them by cutting them up and covering them with paint. </div><div><br /></div><div>Also included is a KoW objective marker and a Xenomoth from Zombicide Invader (boy I wish you could buy those separately). <br /></div><div><br /></div><div>Now I just need to make a Bloater or two and I should have everything I need for Quarantine 37. On the back of painting five (!!) whole miniatures last month, I managed to finish two more that have been sitting on my painting desk since January.. two horses for use in Frostgrave. Can I use two at once? Nope. But you can upgrade your horse and I wanted a model for the basic horse, as well as a model to represent the horse after a few upgrades.<div><br /></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-wl755DW5iuA/YQFfjTW0R6I/AAAAAAAAC7w/BuxAyngoDAkxN_U9PJu4wd1pkccXH6g8ACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/1627479948432090-0.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">

</a>
</div><br /></div><div>And of course, who will ride this horse but a captain. Might as well put all my gold coins in one basket..</div><div><br /></div><div>..and then since 7 models is more than I painted in the last two years, I figured it was time to get back to more terrain. Except.. well, this game has robots. And when a simple black primer and a heavy drybrush of GW Leadbelcher gets you 80% of the way there, I figured that even I could push a few 3D printed minis (from Anvil) over the finish line.</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Some tiles for Walking Dead, Zona Alfa and Fallout. These TTCombat harbour tiles are 1x1 so six will be enough to create a harbour section on a 3x3 water mat. But in most cases I will probably only use two or three of these on an asphalt / rubble mat. The smaller, angled sections and the stairs are from TTComat's Carnevale line. There is a piece of 0.5mm plasticard on top of each tile section to hide the original texture that was there.<div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Since.. the USAriadna pack came out, which was in the heady pre-pandemic days that seem like a distant memory. I got a second set with the Ariadna vs Aleph box, though it languished alongside the first.<div><br /></div><div>It's not that I hate pre-coloured scenery in general or cardboard terrain in particular (I have plenty of Battlesystems stuff and what you get in those Infinity boxes is an excellent way of getting started) but.. the lack of geometric detail, the concerns about stability, the concerns about durability.. not to mention the fact that I have dozens of 'normal' MDF and hard plastic terrain kits (some even painted) meant that I always had a "better" option. I was a terrain snob!</div><div><br /></div><div>Until tonight.</div><div><br /></div><div>I've been meaning to have a go at the Dead or Alive supplement for Stargrave since it came out; I have more than enough minis assembled and this evening I had the opportunity to play it.. but ferrying boxes of fragile terrain to and from storage just to try it out seemed like a chore. Besides, I didn't have enough pieces finished in a consistent style to fill a 3x3 board and I knew it would bug me if I mixed and matched the styles (plus that would mean even <b>more</b> boxes).</div><div><br /></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div>(A store photo for one of the Precinct Sigma kits from MAS. Looks perfect for Judge Dredd, Realities Edge / Hardwired.. or Infinity, of course) </div><div><br /></div><div>Even so, I might not have considered the cardboard Infinity stuff if it hadn't been for the recent videos I watched showing off pre-coloured MDF terrain from <a href="https://shop.microartstudio.com/en/infinity-bundles/1830-precinct-sigma-prepainted-grey-basic-experience-bundle.html?search_query=Precinct+sigma&results=294">Micro Art Studios</a> (I particularly like the graffiti-strewn Precinct Sigma stuff) as well as the previews from <a href="https://multiverse-store.com/">Multiverse</a> with their upcoming pre-coloured MDF products. It had warmed up to the idea of simpler, more robust buildings and there was no denying that the finish was far more detailed that I would ever achieve in paint.</div><div><br /></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div>(Preview from the Multiverse FB page. I'm getting a Fallout vibe from this!) </div><div><br /></div><div>So I opened up both packs, filled a 3x3 with rectangular buildings and shipping containers.. and since the art style fitted the mat, it all looked really good and played well enough. All three of us were in different places but agreed to meet up at Hurston L4. Spawned the Freelancer Max (Lights? Still no. Opening doors? Sometimes) and flew down to Hurston to pick up another player. 10km from the city, the client crashed.</p><p>Rejoined the game (no prompt to rejoin instance). Back at the space station. Stuck in animation glitch and can't finish getting out of the bed. After a few minutes of trying to get out of it, exited game.</p><p>Server full for the next 5 minutes but managed to rejoin.</p><p>Back at the space station. Freelancer is 'destroyed'. Spawn my Avenger (good job I have more than one ship..) and fly to Hurston L4. Meet friend with Mole. Leave Avenger and EVA across. Physics grid throws me into the elevator as I get near it and I take a sucking chest wound. Try to get onto the elevator or get inside, stuck on ship geometry. Glitch in and out of the ship hull for a minute, then die from blood loss.</p><p>Back at the space station. Suck up the expedite fee to get my Freelancer back. Fly to Hurston L4 again. Everybody lands this time and we manage to get into the Mole. I am notified that my ship has been impounded because the station decided not to despawn it for some reason after I landed. We fly to a nearby rock! All three mining turrets are manned! Two of us get our first taste of mining (owner of Mole has done it before). The rock blows up. A piece hits us. Ship sent into a 500rpm spin and everyone blacks out. I am somehow flung out of the ship into space, quite dead.</p><p>Back at the space station, now with a crime stat for... some reason. Other two players are still alive on the spinning Mole. One and a half hours have elapsed. I log off.</p><p>Oh, Star Citizen!</p>Siygesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12506354938045172998noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8466174775728190316.post-27713501325384235682021-02-15T14:22:00.001-08:002021-05-25T05:21:12.653-07:00No Entry! Painting progress continues slowly but surely as I make my way through a pile of stuff that is heaped up on my painting desk. I managed two sets of Jersey barriers from Micro Art Studios plus all the barriers from my Walking Dead boxed set (and some of the bits I have from Mars Attacks), plus the GW Mines of Moria columns (some of which will be used for Frostgrave / Elder Scrolls, but most of which have been kept plain) AND I finished off the other four doors from Dungeon Saga. <div><br></div><div>All in, that adds up to 40+ pieces of scatter terrain in about a month which is basically <br><div><div>unheard of for me! </div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Partly this is because I don't get much time for computer games these days and partly because it continues to be a hot mess. Here is an approximate transcript from my most recent attempt at playing:</p><p><br /></p><p>1) Log in. Find myself in my Freelancer bed. Freelancer is still parked on the surface of Hurston where I left it. Moderately surprised.</p><p>2) Sit in pilots seat. Freelancer immediately falls through the planets surface and blows up. Not surprised at all.</p><p>3) Respawn in the space station above Hurston. Decline the opportunity to pay 6k to expedite the insurance claim on my Freelancer so I start the regular claim. Timer is ~25 minutes after the recent changes. Decide to wait for two friends to fly their Argo Mole up from Lorville.</p><p>4) Friends eventually find their way to the hangar and get into the ship. Ship rolls over during take off and becomes unresponsive to throttle whilst hovering upside down. Hangar doors close. Time is spent trying to roll it over again. Or get it to land. Or get it to take off.</p><p>5) Pilot can't interact with anything anymore and logs out. Mole de-spawns and other player falls to the hangar floor.</p><p>6) 25 minutes has already passed. Decide to do some ground mining instead. Spawn Freelancer and fly down to Lorville. Pilot logs back in and friends are directed to meet me outside Gate 1. </p><p>7) Get close to Lorville and it is dark (it is always bloody dark at Lorville..) The landing lights on the Freelancer Max do not work and the exterior of Lorville is badly lit. Manage a good, even landing in the dark, 900m from Gate 1.</p><p>8) Go out the back ramp of the Freelancer. Thanks to feeble flashlight everything is still dark. Step off the ramp and fall to the ground. I have exactly parked the Freelancer on the roof of a building with the ramp hanging over the edge. There is no way up onto the roof of the building to get into my Freelancer. One friend logs off.</p><p>9) Other friend drives Greycat Roc over from Gate 1 to see the bad parking. Like most wheeled vehicles anywhere near Lorville, it rolls over on its side after a few hundred meters and refuses to be righted. This friend logs off.</p><p>10) I run back to Gate 1. Spawn a Dragonfly and drive it back to my Freelancer. Use the Dragonfly's natural bounciness to get up onto the roof. </p><p>11) Once stationary, I get off the Dragonfly and it freaks out, spinning around and running me over in the process. I loose 50% of my health and begin bleeding out. </p><p>12) Manage to get into the Freelancer Max via the side door but the interior airlock door doesn't want to work.</p><p>13) Airlock door opens after about a minute. I bleed out and die the moment I set foot in the ship.</p><p>Time wasted: 1.5 hours. Almost all of my play sessions start and end this way. Thanks CIG.</p>Siygesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12506354938045172998noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8466174775728190316.post-72152844698050015842020-10-16T08:21:00.004-07:002021-10-23T02:13:02.209-07:00Deadzone. Finally<p>When I backed the original Deadzone kickstarter, it had always been my intention to use the hard plastic scenery to make terrain for Warzone. While this did indeed happen, I have had a large pile of the stuff sitting in a plastic tub for the better part of six years. One of the members of my local club expressed an interest in finally playing Deadzone since we both had the game, but had not played it, so I set about making a table's worth of Deadzone terrain for use in..er .. Deadzone.</p><p><br /></p><p>Impressively (for me, at least), I started painting it on September 3rd and as of today, October 16th, it is finally finished. The barriers and scatter were the last pieces to be done and they were also the first things I have painted with the GW contrast paints. Overall, not bad.</p><p>Now all I need to do is actually paint some of my Deadzone minis..</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-a70swvmH8A8/X4m4BEPjpXI/AAAAAAAACtQ/y3MkWvVPnAIFuNOA9L2iVzm_beMb5YJvACLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/DZScatter.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1144" data-original-width="2048" height="358" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-a70swvmH8A8/X4m4BEPjpXI/AAAAAAAACtQ/y3MkWvVPnAIFuNOA9L2iVzm_beMb5YJvACLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h358/DZScatter.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5rJO1bmzJXM/X4m4BEasFXI/AAAAAAAACtM/JY3N5tbfuVs2f2pmha8h9VlDev-vY73SACLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/DZTable2.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1367" data-original-width="2048" height="428" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5rJO1bmzJXM/X4m4BEasFXI/AAAAAAAACtM/JY3N5tbfuVs2f2pmha8h9VlDev-vY73SACLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h428/DZTable2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zADC-uDhEdA/X4m4BBguLOI/AAAAAAAACtI/l-wzWYWu-Ow8yI-p5mjRw5XGK8JQ0orZACLcBGAsYHQ/s1974/DZTable1.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1611" data-original-width="1974" height="522" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zADC-uDhEdA/X4m4BBguLOI/AAAAAAAACtI/l-wzWYWu-Ow8yI-p5mjRw5XGK8JQ0orZACLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h522/DZTable1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZA-3HhMOy-U/X4m4BtV89_I/AAAAAAAACtU/FUAHMfy8sc8Ui651-soOMCQ6P4qmOsNZACLcBGAsYHQ/s1884/DZTable3.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1626" data-original-width="1884" height="552" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZA-3HhMOy-U/X4m4BtV89_I/AAAAAAAACtU/FUAHMfy8sc8Ui651-soOMCQ6P4qmOsNZACLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h552/DZTable3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oDhP4bxLo-I/X4m6UkaR6sI/AAAAAAAACt4/EThuCbhyCy0C8wZKQvmag-_7ydNDu39OwCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/DZTableCloseup.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1256" data-original-width="2048" height="392" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oDhP4bxLo-I/X4m6UkaR6sI/AAAAAAAACt4/EThuCbhyCy0C8wZKQvmag-_7ydNDu39OwCLcBGAsYHQ/w640-h392/DZTableCloseup.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div></div><br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><p><br /></p>Siygesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12506354938045172998noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8466174775728190316.post-84560059039981003512020-05-18T01:35:00.001-07:002021-05-25T05:21:46.941-07:00More bits..A few more bits and pieces finished off in April and May - some nice plastic terrain from Drakerys, comprising of Scenery Set A and Scenery Set B. Sometimes..Hobby butterfly that I am, it is inevitable that I will occasionally - and often by accident - finish a project that I started. That has been the case in Feburary and March of this year where I finished off some terrain pieces primarily for Rangers of Shadowdeep. The excellent Gloomburg Tower from Warcradle and a bridge and walls from Warlord..<br />

<div dir="ltr">
So.. things have been busy these last two months and I have completed two new projects that were not even on my list two months ago (naturally).</div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
I have a draft of a new Rangers of Shadowdeep mission, At Any Price, which is complete and uploaded, but needs more testing before I post it to the Facebook group, and a new Warzone mission, <a href="https://www.warzoneresurrection.com/forum/index.php?topic=265.0">Storm Warning</a>, which I already posted to the Warzone forum.</div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
Now I am taking a break from the writing to do proper hobby stuff; namely I am painting up my TTCombat Sector 3 stuff which I need for my "Mars" Warzone table. A few panels still need masking and spraying white and I haven't decided if I will paint the hand rails orange or yellow yet, but the sponge chipping and washes that follow shouldn't take too long and then it will be complete. </div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DFPTcfNUzIs/XPBrtQgdh5I/AAAAAAAACaU/M6PGRSwsIFg66ONGpNaOe4n1kr19JPdtwCLcBGAs/s1600/20190531_003958.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1149" data-original-width="1600" height="286" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DFPTcfNUzIs/XPBrtQgdh5I/AAAAAAAACaU/M6PGRSwsIFg66ONGpNaOe4n1kr19JPdtwCLcBGAs/s400/20190531_003958.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
I also ordered some more Forward Base buildings from Antenocitis. My original layout called for only two, plus the garage and two connecting corridors. However I picked up the hub at some point and now I have another three on the way. With 7 buildings I will at least have the option of filling a table with them, or splitting them between two 4x4 tables along with my GF9 and Sector 3 pieces.</div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
As an added bonus, I should be able to use some of this terrain for Gamma Wolves. Having been inspired by the many great mecha models in the Facebook group I have dug out an old AT-43 Red Blok walker for a heavy frame and have purchased a few 1/144 Gundam kits that will be kitbashed into medium frames. They won't get painted any time soon, but I look forward to completing the models so that I can try the crew out.</div>

I also tidied up the version of Ilsa from Kirkwood and baked it into a PDF. Next I will work on doing the same for the Environmental Hazard rules before I return my attention back to the Fallout campaign system I've been working on. On the hobby side of things, I am slowly working towards minis and terrain required for Deniable Ops.<br />

While the future of the game is no longer in the hands of Prodos, there remains an amount of written work (rules, profiles, fluff etc) that was created by the team but never officially finished. The plan was to collate these pieces of work - or at least, the pieces that made sense to include together - and release them as part of the Kirkwood expansion.<br />
<br />
Of course, things went sideways and that didn't happen in the slick and polished manner we wanted (indeed it was super hard to get it published in any manner) but eventually a PDF was cobbled together and released. This was largely the last "official" act from Prodos and the rules team, but the quality (and indeed the completeness) of those individual efforts varies greatly. It is my intention to continue working on several of the documents until they reach a standard that I am happy with and these will be released <a href="https://www.warzoneresurrection.com/forum/index.php" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />
<br />
Warzone is not the only game that I am writing content for. In an entirely non-official capacity I am also working on 'proper' campaign systems for both Mantic's The Walking Dead as well as the Fallout Wasteland Warfare game from Modiphius. I have also been working on missions and house rules for Rangers of Shadowdeep. This means that, alongside my hobby projects I also have a number of 'content' projects in the works, and here is the current state of the queue:<br />
<br />
Warzone Resurrection mission "Building Bridges" - <a href="https://www.warzoneresurrection.com/forum/index.php?topic=250.0" target="_blank">Complete</a>.<br />

The Walking Dead campaign - Paused, 30% complete.<br />
<br />
There is also the matter of Warzone Resurrection Deniable Ops, which is currently 'rules complete' at 111 pages including 19 missions, and is available at version 0.14. In terms of the written effort, it needs testing and balancing, as well as general editing. The next version will be 0.2 but this is way down the queue because the biggest challenge is now in terms of layout and interior art / photographs and the latter is being held up by my lack of painted models and terrain.<br />

<br />
The best tabletop rivers I have seen have always been hand made, single-section affairs that look beautiful but would be a pain to transport. Modular rivers have been around for ages and plenty of people make their own, but the glossy surface of the water (which looks good!) always draws attention to the segmented nature of the terrain and there are always noticeable lips or gaps (which look bad!). For that reason I decided the best compromise would be a neoprene based solution and there were only three well-known manufacturers to choose from.<br />
<br />
The offering from <a href="https://www.deepcutstudio.com/product/terrain-tiles-clear-river/" target="_blank">Deep Cut Studios</a> looks nice and has the advantage of coming in two flavours (clean and dirty) but there is a lot of grass on either side which makes the tiles less suited to non-grassy mats. In addition - and this is a personal beef - the river itself isn't very wide. If it looks like a model could take a running jump over it, the river just isn't wide enough in my opinion!<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.playmats.eu/33-rivers" target="_blank">Playmats.EU<span id="goog_1779853168"></span><span id="goog_1779853169"></span> </a>also offer river sections and from the photos, I think the artwork is closest to the style I am looking for. The river banks themselves are narrow, and the sections themselves are cut to follow the shape of the river which results in a more natural look. Price wise they are inexpensive per section, but by the time you add 5 or 6 sections to your cart to ensure you can cover your 4ft table and switch up the layout now and again, you end up paying about the same price as Deep Cut or GSW (below). However, two things made me hesitate - the plastic surface on the river sections, which solve two problems but create two more, and the width of the river itself.<br />
<br />
In the end, I decided to try the <a href="http://www.greenstuffworld.com/en/inicio/752-water-river-neoprene-terrain-set.html" target="_blank">river sections sold by Green Stuff World</a> called the Water River - Neoprene Terrain Set. Even by the time you add shipping, the ~ €30 price tag is very reasonable for the number of tile sections you get and most importantly, the river itself is a decent width and does not resemble a glorified stream! Green Stuff World put out their own <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SYmzPIGmaXg" target="_blank">youtube video</a> to show off the tiles but it didn't really answer my questions. How well does the detail scale? How versatile is the colour palette in case I want to use it on a variety of mats? How good is the production quality on 'retail' sets of the tiles?<br />
<br />
Well, let's see:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-SpJxDvvbLaw/XCz5K-tb95I/AAAAAAAACUM/ZgC8_xO1Y9wgM0DTWPH4S2x3568DL5-GACLcBGAs/s1600/junglemat2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1365" data-original-width="768" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-SpJxDvvbLaw/XCz5K-tb95I/AAAAAAAACUM/ZgC8_xO1Y9wgM0DTWPH4S2x3568DL5-GACLcBGAs/s320/junglemat2.jpg" width="180" /></a><a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cETJJ92YMNY/XCz5FLrKxaI/AAAAAAAACUA/sbIgp6fw9JwPwae7yZ9_Yiuc8LaL92uWACLcBGAs/s1600/junglemat.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1365" data-original-width="768" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cETJJ92YMNY/XCz5FLrKxaI/AAAAAAAACUA/sbIgp6fw9JwPwae7yZ9_Yiuc8LaL92uWACLcBGAs/s320/junglemat.jpg" width="180" /></a><a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RClbpHYHG_I/XCz5WMsjQkI/AAAAAAAACUY/29FbTjOJHJMQDblWKviNljmgVB-GC7ybACLcBGAs/s1600/seems.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1365" data-original-width="768" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RClbpHYHG_I/XCz5WMsjQkI/AAAAAAAACUY/29FbTjOJHJMQDblWKviNljmgVB-GC7ybACLcBGAs/s320/seems.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We start with my 4ft jungle mat, which is primarily a vibrant green and orangey brown. Obviously the colour isn't great match but the important thing to note here is that the 'long' river sections are basically 12" long but there are only three of the 'plain' sections, meaning you will need to include a bridge or a crossing if you want a straight river like the picture on the left to run the length of a 4ft table. You can include the other sections to mix it up a little, but due to their shorter length you will probably end up with the river overhanging your table or mat. The texture on the tiles matches up nicely no matter which pieces you use, although with the straight edges to the river banks it does look a little strange. Of course this is easily fixed if you are prepared to attack your new river tiles with some scissors!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-96sLaX9Kjxg/XCz5c60uR5I/AAAAAAAACUw/MZXtuAeNB8oWBVup1SzQWibkXgGW1ZiKACLcBGAs/s1600/tileedges.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="768" data-original-width="1365" height="112" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-96sLaX9Kjxg/XCz5c60uR5I/AAAAAAAACUw/MZXtuAeNB8oWBVup1SzQWibkXgGW1ZiKACLcBGAs/s200/tileedges.jpg" width="200" /></a><a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-M5gZylPtuIM/XCz5ZVaAqEI/AAAAAAAACUo/QiDJ5cSiGNsuMyUFVAke64qF3wmJ9VMYwCLcBGAs/s1600/tilecorners.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="768" data-original-width="1365" height="112" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-M5gZylPtuIM/XCz5ZVaAqEI/AAAAAAAACUo/QiDJ5cSiGNsuMyUFVAke64qF3wmJ9VMYwCLcBGAs/s200/tilecorners.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In terms of production quality for the individual tile sections, I would say this was "pretty good", a solid 7 out of 10. The edges on about half of the tile sections were slightly frayed (see left) but you can only see it up close. Also, because the sections are rather light (a good thing if you are carrying these around) the corners don't always lay flat on the table. Of course this is a problem with gaming mats too, but the total weight of the mat counteracts this. I suspect this is part of the reason that Playmats.EU put the plastic layer on top of their rivers, but since that has disadvantages of it's own, I don't see any way to avoid it. The actual art on the sections is excellent, as is the print quality.</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The river on 3ft cobblestone, dark grass and snow mats. Although there is a splash of green on the river banks, it is subtle enough that the greys and browns really help the sections blend into the cobblestone mat. With walls running along either side, I think it will look great, perfect for Malifaux or Warmachine.</div>
<br />

<br />
With some loose rocks and foliage you can easily hide the edges of the river sections. Or you can just use some walls and hedges as I have done above with a table set up to play Rangers of Shadowdeep.<br />
<br />
Overall these tiles have convinced me that this is the best compromise if you can't have a single length of river you have made yourself. They look awesome at a distance and still pretty damned good up close. The built in bridge sections are handy and there are several "dead ends" and corners if you want the river to play a bigger part in the layout of your tables. Hopefully Green Stuff World will one day offer an expansion set because a few streams wouldn't go amiss, along with some 45 degree turns to help the layouts look more natural.<br />

<br />
Wow, where did 2018 go? It seems like it was only a few weeks ago that I was trying to get the prizes sent off for the 500 point list competition we ran at the end of last year.. and then I brought some scenery, and thought about painting a few things (more of the former, less of the latter).<br />
<br />
And then it was September 2018. Dammit.<br />
<br />
On the plus side, I finally got <a href="http://www.freewillstation.net/DeniableOps/DeniableOps014.zip" target="_blank">Deniable Ops 0.14</a> ready, and I think I'm done now with adding new content. 0.15 will be a consistency pass and I will factor in any feedback I get on the rules and mission balance. After that, it is time so whip the layout into shape and start adding some photos.Siygesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12506354938045172998noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8466174775728190316.post-6714789759309259422017-12-20T08:28:00.001-08:002019-01-02T11:06:38.450-08:00The Eastern Push, Part 4<div dir="ltr">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/--g6qLU4eim0/Wi_uY1Z7-TI/AAAAAAAACNM/AhbxaMTupagsj0TydywP7b0UWpnttkMggCLcBGAs/s1600/24862107_10156143921467241_486920191031653668_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="714" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/--g6qLU4eim0/Wi_uY1Z7-TI/AAAAAAAACNM/AhbxaMTupagsj0TydywP7b0UWpnttkMggCLcBGAs/s400/24862107_10156143921467241_486920191031653668_n.jpg" width="297" /></a></div>
<br />
Mostly I watched The Thing, and ended up carrying on with the assembly the following day. Everything in the picture above was assembled (with some part swapping on the Necromutants and Necromutant Leaders for more variety) but eventually I ran out of bases.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-H0HbK2nxiqk/Wi_ubjS6HbI/AAAAAAAACNQ/jSX-dNVV73oNk-9XlJ6mQ-p8fYy60fTVwCLcBGAs/s1600/20171210_001111.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="417" data-original-width="800" height="166" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-H0HbK2nxiqk/Wi_ubjS6HbI/AAAAAAAACNQ/jSX-dNVV73oNk-9XlJ6mQ-p8fYy60fTVwCLcBGAs/s320/20171210_001111.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Of course, I am also 5 space zombies short. I found my old kickstarter stuff in a box and helpfully I had left it all on the resin frames. Everything, that is, but the Undead Legionnaires. For some reason I had cut them all off and tossed the parts loose into the box. I think I will leave the assembly of the last five for another day..<br />
